Thoughts in Verse

Thoughts that great hearts once broke for, we
Breathe cheaply in the common air;
The dust we trample heedlessly
Throbbed once in saints and heroes rare
Who perished, opening for the race
New pathways to the common place.
— Lowell.

I live for those who love me,
For those who hold me true,
For the heaven that lies above me
And awaits my spirit, too.
For the cause that needs assistance,
For the wrong that needs resistance,
For the future in the distance.
And the good that I can do.
— Mrs. Linnaeus Banks
